ALICE THE MUSICAL - ORIGINAL 1998 CAST ALBUM RE-RELEASED

As part of the celebrations for its 25th Anniversary, pbm has re-released one of its earliest recordings.  ALICE THE MUSICAL, commissioned and produced by the Lyric Theatre Belfast in 1998, was released on CD nearly 20 years ago, and the show has since gone on to enjoy productions around the world (click here for more on the show).

Speaking about the re-release, Paul Boyd said: "It is quite a momentous thing to realise that your first CD is nearly two decades old, but as it was a best selling recording for some years I do remember it fondly.  ALICE THE MUSICAL has gone on to enjoy many great productions since its premiere, and today the musical sounds very different than it did in 1998, but we decided to re-release the album exactly as it was, with no tinkering outside of the necessary digital transfer. I did include a re-orchestrated version of the Caterpillar's song "Nothing Here Makes Sense" on the ONE NIGHT STAND album, but on the ALICE THE MUSICAL album all of the songs are exactly as they were in 1998.  And it's available online from the usual stores and platforms for the first time ever!"

Other titles from pbm's back catalogue of cast recordings are due to be re-issued this year, including the original 2000 CD of RED, and the 2013 anniversary recording of HANSEL & GRETTEL.

BML's "THE RULES OF MUSICAL THEATRE WRITING" AT LYRIC BELFAST

Whilst at the Lyric Theatre Belfast rehearsing the new children's musical BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Paul is hosting a one-off workshop for Northern Irish writers of musical theatre.

Paul Boyd started his career 25 years ago in Northern Ireland and since 1992 has been commissioned to write 23 original musicals.  As a director Paul has worked across Ireland, the UK, and internationally.  In addition Paul is the administrator of London's BOOK Music & Lyrics - the UK’s only programme of ongoing workshops for the creation, crafting and development of musical theatre writing and related specialist skills.

BOOK Music & Lyrics (BML) has been running for eight years under the direction of Broadway veteran David James, nurturing the development of new British musical theatre excellence through weekly collaborative workshops.  Led by established professionals passing on their legacy, workshops are constructive, peer-supported, and cover all aspects of creating strong, new material.

“The Rules of Musical Theatre Writing” is an introduction to the BML workshop programme, and is aimed at writers of new musicals with projects in the early stages of development. Starting with the basic “10 Golden Rules” of musical theatre construction, the workshop will examine the requirements for a strong writing team, ways to identify like-minded collaborators, how to structure the basic components of a new musical, and how to package the final written product for presentation.

Workshop places are strictly limited, and writing teams are encouraged to book places together.  Each participant or team is asked to bring along a piece of work - a show in development, a project idea, a selection of songs, a script outline, scenes, or even a title - for feedback and constructive criticism.

This is a unique opportunity to experience this style of workshop programme outside of London.  For more details and to book a place, click here.

PUCKOON - THE REVIEWS ARE IN

The acclaimed production of Spike Milligan's PUCKOON has been touring across Ireland since the beginning of April (including a two week run at Belfast's MAC theatre) and tonight begins the UK leg of its tour at Middlesborough Theatre.  Upcoming venues include Theatr Clwyd, Stourbridge Theatre, Key Theatre Peterborough, and Borough Theatre Abergavenny.

Meanwhile a host of reviews have been published praising the show and Paul's role in it as co-writer, composer, and performer, including;

"the centrepiece of Puckoon is Boyd.  His narration enriches the work as much as his musical compositions ... arguably the epitome of this highly entertaining work" (www.thebiglist.co.uk)

"Whether you’re an avid Milligan fan, or a complete novice to his work, this production is a must see ... Be ready to laugh until your cheeks are sore!" (www.culturehubmagazine.co.uk)
"The music ... is by the talented Paul Boyd ... If you know nothing about Spike Milligan or Puckoon, don’t worry, this is a hilarious, frantic and chaotic play that will have you laughing throughout ... Big Telly Theatre Company captures the comic genius of Spike’s book and brings it all crazily to life" (www.pastiebap.com)

"Paul Boyd (“The Writer”) superbly anchors the absurd show ... The entertainment is novel, the performances full tilt, and the storyline as hard to unravel as Spike Milligan’s mind.   Director Zoë Seaton and musical director/actor Paul Boyd have created a comical gem" (www.alaninbelfast.blogspot.co.uk)
