company history
Irish writer and composer Paul Boyd has been creating original musical theatre since 1992 when his student production Macbeth The Musical became a surprise hit and transferred from its home on campus at the University of Ulster to the nearby Riverside Theatre and eventually to Belfast’Äôs Group Theatre.¬Ý The show went on to tour Ireland extensively in 1994.
In 1998, with five more musicals to his name, Paul formed Paul Boyd Music (pbm) to administrate an ever increasing number of requests for performing rights from theatre companies and independent producers.
In 2001 Paul was invited to co-produce his new musical Red with Northern Ireland’Äôs national producing theatre, the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, and so pbm established its own theatrical production wing Purpose Built Musicals (pbm). Under this title pbm began staging Paul’Äôs original musicals for professional venues and promoters across Ireland.
Today pbm occupies a unique position within the professional musical theatre industry in Ireland and represents Paul’Äôs shows to professional organisations around the world through a programme of licensing, producing and developing.

licensing . producing . developing
licensing : pbm owns and manages the performing rights to the original stage works of Paul Boyd and licences his shows to professional theatres, producers and promoters around the world interested in staging their own productions. In recent years pbm has licensed its material to professional producing venues across Ireland, the UK, and the USA and has also issued performing rights to a few select amateur and student organisations across the UK, the USA, Germany, and Australia. Requests for information about performing rights can be made by contacting pbm via e-mail using the address supplied here. Perusal material can be found here.
producing : The pbm creative team's many years of professional experience in the areas of directing, producing, budgeting, casting, and marketing have become an invaluable asset to many venues interested in staging a pbm show. During the company’Äôs most prolific period pbm was responsible for annual productions at a number of theatres throughout Ireland, including three-year tenures at both The Market Place Theatre in Armagh and The Pavilion Theatre in Co. Dublin, and two co-productions with the Lyric Theatre in Belfast. In more recent years the company has cut back on its production service activities in favour of its licensing and developing operations, although pbm has continued to produce the annual pbm Summer School at theatres across Ireland.
developing : pbm is committed to the development of new musical theatre and the advancement of standards in musical theatre presentation. In pursuit of this goal Paul Boyd often voluntarily undertakes re-writes of his back catalogue of work in order to meet new production demands and pbm regards even its most popular and successful productions as works in continual development. pbm also instigates and supports the development of all-new Paul Boyd material and in recent years the company has been responsible for commissioning the hit musical Pinocchio (named 'Best Musical 2003' by national Sunday paper The Sunday Life and nominated as 'Best Show For Children and Young People' at the 2007 TMA Theatre Awards), the 2003 cabaret revue Boydy's Greatest Bits, and the musical Molly Wobbly's Tit Factory (short-listed for The Highland Quest for a New Musical in 2006).pbm_resources.htmlshapeimage_10_link_0shapeimage_10_link_1
